Asus ROG Strix G –budget gaming laptop romping in RGB

Overall aesthetics:

  • I really enjoy the aesthetics of this machine. The plastic is textured with shallow angular striations – a subtle but effective way to indicate this is more than just a notebook. Even better, this has the added effect of not gathering fingerprints the way a smooth plastic body normally would.
  • The ROG logo on the lid does not light up. It is shiny black/reflective, which makes it noticeable without screaming “Gamer”.

      Display :

  • Very nice visually. Out of the box, it defaulted everything to 125% of normal size which made things look less crisp. Reducing it to 100% and it becomes very clean. The screen is bright with high quality contrast. Colors are great for gaming, though I can’t comment on photo editing or anything of a professional nature.
  • From a hardware standpoint: Panel is very slim. Being plastic, you can get some screen flex when torquing it from both corners, but using one hand it feels solid. Very easy to open with one hand, and when closed, no flex whatsoever.
  • Viewing angles are generous, with no color distortions or otherwise even at extreme angles.
  • 120hz screen performed beautifully in my testing, with no screen-tearing or ghosting even in the most intense, GPU-heavy moments.

  • Very solid. Again, it is made of plastic, but feels sturdy. No flex or creaking when holding with one hand/by a corner.
  • The space in front of the keyboard is ample for a wrist-rest, and there is no give or “squish” to it when doing so. The touchpad is just slightly off-center of the chassis, but less than many others I’ve used and remains centered in relation to the keyboard

Performance :

I tested 3 different games which are all pretty intensive in different ways: Diablo 3, Destiny 2, and Jedi: Fallen Order.

  • Diablo 3: Runs flawlessly. Smooth gameplay, no stuttering even when under heavy load from hordes of enemies and spell effects. Fan speed never maxed out during my testing.
  • Destiny 2: Runs flawlessly at Max settings. No stuttering, no ghosting, no screen tearing. Fan speed approached max
